Saturday’s UFC 274 pay-per-view main event changed dramatically on Friday.

Like Brett Okamoto He explained to ESPN, Charles Oliveira (32-8-0) was stripped of the UFC Lightweight Championship after failing to make heavyweight on multiple title defense occasions on Saturday versus Justin Gaethje (23-3-0). Even after Oliveira got an extra hour to shed the extra weight, he was still scoring half a pound over the 155-pound limit required to defend the title.

In the meantime, Gethje has gained weight and thus could win what is now considered a vacant championship by defeating Oliveira on Saturday night. The 33-year-old was the interim champion when Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated him in October 2020 in Nurmagomedov’s last professional match to date.

Nurmagomedov repeatedly insisted on his retirement.

After Nurmagomedov retired, Oliveira defeated Michael Chandler for the vacant belt in the UFC 262 last May. He was 32 years old at the time successfully He defended the crown against Dustin Poirier at UFC 269 in December and was hoping to defend his second title on the first Saturday of May.

It is not clear what will be booked for the title if Gethji does not defeat Oliveira.
